EP089: MARTIN WHATSON
APRIL 2018
"I found it quite boring to just make political messages black and white stencils"
The work of Norwegian artist Martin Whatson is in very high demand even at it’s relatively lofty price-point, and for good reason. As one of the leading figures in the scandinavian street art scene and a founding member of the notorious WOLF crew, Whatson has cultivated an artistic style over many years which is part stencil, part vandalism, extremely accessible to your every day art collector but sophisticated enough that even high end collectors can’t get enough. We grabbed Martin directly off of a wall in Berlin during the opening week of the Urban Nation Museum and had a chat about how he got to the point in his career that he’s at now, how creating ‘multiples’ of a single image rather than “one offs” can be beneficial to an artist, the struggles of juggling a busy career as a self employed artists with his roll as father of two, and loads more.
